New York Cares Day

by on Oct.23, 2007, under Uncategorized

The charity event on Saturday was actually lots of fun. Apparently it was this really big thing, New York Cares Day, more than 1500 volunteers going to 122 schools in the NYC area and doing stuff to help out. The MIT Alumni Club of New York had asked all the alumni in the NYC area to come help out, so there were 8 including myself. We went to Pacific High School in Brooklyn (I don’t think it has a webpage), a high school especially for kids ages 17-21 who have had their school time interrupted for some reason and want to continue. (I was a little unsure about calling 17-21 year-olds “kids”, but that’s the word the assistant principal used when she talked to us about the school…)

Of course, the MIT Alumni weren’t the only ones doing stuff at the school. There were people gardening and organizing files, and a bunch of painting going on. We painted two different stairwells with large murals. At the first one, an artist woman had already sketched out a basic design; it was a big quote from Martin Luther King Jr. with various decorations around it. (“The ultimate measure of a man is not how he acts in times of comfort and convenience but in times of conflict and controversy.” Probably not the exact wording, but it’s close.) And we painted these lines around it to decorate…and then we got all excited and painted other stuff like suns, tic-tac-toe games, trees…Eventually we stopped doing that (“We’ve done enough damage here”, I said), and we asked for another place to paint, so they sent us to another stairwell. We painted various wonders of the world like the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, then an orange path connecting them.

I’m not that good at visual art, of course, but it seemed to go pretty well.

After that we all walked around Brooklyn for a while, chatting and looking for a place to eat. After we got something to eat I eventually excused myself and went home.

NY Cares Day

Well, I’m off to participate in New York Cares Day. I keep wondering why, exactly…not that I dislike participating in charity events, but it’s so darn early. But the MIT Alumni asked people to come in, so…
