Writing in dreams

by on Jan.23, 2009, under Uncategorized

I took a nap and I had a curious dream. I felt like I was hearing a story that someone sent into a website talking about their experiences…This guy was a Best Buy employee, and he was working at Best Buy wanting to buy something, but there was a customer being serviced that would take hours. So, for this situation, they had a mannequin dressed in Best Buy clothes with a clipboard that they put in line to hold their place. Of course, the thing about the clipboard was that random passersby would write stuff on it…and over time this had evolved into an interesting collaborative story!

The story writers then decided that they wanted to keep control of the story in the hands of the experienced writers…but of course, this was all anonymous to begin with. Their solution was to write a bit where they explained that only story bits that contained text in a color other than black would be counted. All else would be treated as attempts by evil conspiracies to influence the story reality. So, if you wanted to contribute to the story, you had to carry around a red pen or something. Eventually no one would be bothering to read through the previous pages of the clipboard, so they wouldn’t know about this little rule…unless they had been participating for a while!

Of course, thinking about it now, I doubt anyone smart would want to shut out new writers. Without new writers, a project like this eventually becomes stagnant and abandoned.

(…Then there was something about puma kittens, but whatever, dreams are like that.)

Arcade Dreams

by on Nov.16, 2008, under Uncategorized

I just had the most amazing dream…I dreamed I was spending some time at a place that had lots of old arcade games set up to play. Classic stuff like Pac-Man, Centipede, Ms. Pac-Man, of course…but there were also a lot of them that just came right from my imagination, and yet seemed in some way plausible. Arizona Sun, a game where you played a private detective being menaced by thugs, and its sequel Louisiana Bailey, starring his female counterpart. Metalevel, where each level was drawn (recycled, pastiched?) from a classic video game. And then there was the room with several rows of cocktail cabinets with instruction manuals that could be perused…stuff like Sasmiris, the emergent-story game from Chris Crawford. And Trojan, with its hilariously bad full-motion video of women in impractical armor. And Don-Cha, the sexually explicit caveman therapy game.

…And then I woke up and realized that none of these games actually exist. Sigh.

I had an interesting dream last night. It was kind of like I was acting in a Broadway play…well, probably off-Broadway. There was some sort of deal where you could buy the chance to have a leading role in this play. I suspect I had gotten it as a gift. I want to say it was based on “The Wizard of Oz”, but that’s probably inaccurate…It’s more like my dreaming mind brought together a couple fragments of stories along with the title “Wizard of Oz”. The story had to do with a “wicked queen” (obviously not Oz in other words), and I was playing one of two lieutenants, I guess would be the word. The odd thing was that everyone was being manipulated into being “evil”. There was some power behind the throne making sure this all happened. But we were all really nice people.

I mean, the characters were. Then I got to go backstage during intermission and hang out with the actors. They seemed pretty nice too; even though the queen was bitching about my performance previously, she warmed up quickly. And the director (I think?) was so impressed with me, and my knowledge of H. P. Lovecraft, that he bought me a book or two from a Cthulhu bookstore further down the mall. (Dreams have a lot of stuff that says “Don’t ask, just accept it”.)

Interesting. It sort of makes me wonder what talents I might have that I never developed. (Much.)

And one more birthday!

by on Aug.19, 2006, under Uncategorized

Happy Birthday to…ME!

Yes, that’s right, it’s my birthday. I’ve gone where sscougall went last year; that’s right, I’m now officially 30. Of course, I don’t feel that old, or mature.

Last night I had an interesting dream.

First, I dreamed that I was enrolling at MIT again for another year. This is not a new dream theme for me. In this particular case, I was exploring my new dorm room. This was also not new dream territory…I think it stems from me deriving some happiness from being somewhere I was independent and felt like I belonged. So, that’s all well and good.

Then the dream got a bit different. The dorm room I was in turned into a whole suite of rooms that were now mine. There were beds for many people to stay in…and blackboards, where I could work out things and brainstorm. Or even teach? Plus, there was eventually a shop in this suite of rooms…like a convenience store. The previous owner had left a cash register with a bunch of dimes, all ready for me to start making money on my own.

Don’t feel like you have to make the symbolism too tough, there, subconscious…
