HP Drabble – Specialties

by on May.10, 2008, under Uncategorized

As requested by vincentursus…upon rereading his idea I think I may have misinterpreted it. However, this story came to mind and I wrote it. If he’s unsatisfied I’ll just have to write another (in my copious spare time). 😉

=====

“What’s your specialty, Harry?” Ron said suddenly.

“Hmmm?” Harry continued wafting the feather overhead.

“I was just thinking,” Ron continued. “Lots of people have specialties, like Neville’s with Herbology.”

“Flying, I suppose,” Harry replied. “Or Charms.” The feather burst into bits and rained down upon them.

“Ron’s good at Charms,” Hermione said, brushing off dust.

“I what?” Ron stared.

“Well, your father’s car, and your brothers’ Wizard Wheezes. It’s in your blood.”

“You’re good at creating things, Hermione,” Harry said. “Like those flames.”

“I never was good at creating stuff,” Ron griped.

Hermione smirked. “Of course not, you’re a boy.”

Finite Incantatem

by on Jul.21, 2007, under Uncategorized

I have just finished Deathly Hallows. An hour ago, that is…I spent some time talking to my parents about it. I have to say it satisfied, even exceeded my expectations. I know there are some aspects I, and perhaps others, would have liked to be explored further (Hi, Phoebe!), but…yeah.

And now…to write huge posts about it!

Off to stand in line for Harry Potter!

by on Jul.20, 2007, under Uncategorized

I had this idea for a “Rowlingverse” roleplaying game. Each character would have fairly simple attributes to define themselves; Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. So if you were, say, trying to figure out a logic puzzle, you’d roll your Ravenclaw score.

Anyway, I’m off to Barnes & Noble to stand on line!

Harry Potter excerpts, pt. 2 (of 2 (probably))

by on Jul.19, 2007, under Uncategorized

So, I guess I don’t have much credibility left, but I still want to post these. The reason I put a possible “of 3” on the first post is because I wasn’t sure if there would be any more interesting stuff in Half-Blood Prince (I’m nearly finished rereading it). Doesn’t look like there’ll be much else worth excerpting, though.

“Harry got slowly out of bed and started looking for socks. He found a pair under his bed and, after pulling a spider off one of them, put them on. Harry was used to spiders, because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them, and that was where he slept.”
–Sorcerer’s (Philosopher’s) Stone, p. 19

“Harry suddenly realized that the spider that had dropped him was saying something. It had been hard to tell, because he clicked his pincers with every word he spoke.
‘Aragog!’ it called. ‘Aragog!'”
–Chamber of Secrets, p. 276

“Quite a few people screamed. A giant spider, six feet tall and covered in hair, was advancing on Ron, clicking its pincers menacingly.”
–Prisoner of Azkaban, p. 138

“But it was no use–the spider was either so large, or so magical, that the spells were doing no more than aggravating it. Harry had one horrifying glimpse of eight shining black eyes and razor-sharp pincers before it was upon him.”
–Goblet of Fire, p. 631

“They moved from the drawning room to a dining room on the ground floor where they found spiders large as saucers lurking in the dresser (Ron left the room hurriedly to make a cup of tea and did not return for an hour and a half).”
–Order of the Phoenix, p.117

“At last, Narcissa hurried up a street named Spinner’s End, over which the towering mill chimney seemed to hover like a giant admonitory finger.”
–Half-Blood Prince, p. 21

“There are only two people in the whole world who know the full contents of the prophecy made about you and Lord Voldemort, and they are both standing in this smelly, spidery broom shed.”
–Half-Blood Prince, p. 78

“See, the rest o’ the tribe…Aragog’s family…they’re gettin’ a bit funny now he’s ill…bit restive…”
–Half-Blood Prince, p. 231

Harry Potter excerpts, pt. 1 (of 3 (probably))

by on Jul.18, 2007, under Uncategorized

I’ve been rereading the Harry Potter books. These are some things I felt like recording. Because, well, just because. There will be a couple more posts like this. Since these are all from books 1-6, and not very spoiler-y quotes anyway, I won’t bother lj-cutting them.

“What?” said Harry in disbelief, as Ginny made a noise like an angry cat.”
Order of the Phoenix, p. 72

“Fred fell into a doze, his head sagging sideways on his shoulder. Ginny was curled like a cat on her chair, but her eyes were open; Harry could see them reflecting the firelight.”
Order of the Phoenix, p. 479

“Ginny, whose ankle had been minded in a trice by Madam Pomfrey, was curled up at the foot of Hermione’s bed…”;
Order of the Phoenix, p. 846

Harry Potter and the Unmentionable Metaphor

by on Jul.16, 2007, under Uncategorized

So I’m reading an article in the New York Times about the Harry Potter films. The basic point is that the books have delved into more mature topics as they go along, and the films have followed suit…with the directors contributing to the evolution of the series. And then I came across this quote:

“And now, in ‘Order of the Phoenix’, Harry finally discoveres that girls are an altogether different kind of chamber of secrets.”

Oh, my. Maybe it’s just me, but I think that’s a rather unfortunate turn of phrase. It brings such naughty images to mind.

“Hey, baby, want to get out my wand and let me into your chamber of secrets?”

Of course, given the state of HP fanfic, I feel certain I’m not the first to make this “connection”…but it still amuses me.

Fear my brainstorms

by on Jun.15, 2006, under Uncategorized

A gasp, and she awoke.

“Where…where am I?” Darkness surrounded. But not impenetrable, flickers stabbed the corners of her eyes, fleeing when she turned her head.

“You had a good life.” The voice came from all around. Pictures appeared, flaring on a screen, clicking away almost before she could process. “Hard. Difficult at times, but then there was success. Magic? It can turn things around, to, away.”

“Yes,” she said, almost coughing. The voice was so dry. “But I was leaving…why am I here? Who are you?”

“A new world opened up to embrace you, engulf you. All dependent on words. Culminating in this.” One picture stayed.

“I was supposed to be on holiday!”

“You left! After this!” The green and black faces stared at her. “Number Six.”

“I was just taking a break, that’s all, just a quick break from the words, going on vacation…Who are you? What do you want?!?”

“Why did you resign?”
